01OM651 Balance Shaft Chain and Oil Pump Drive Failure
CriticalOccasionalEngine $3,500–$12,000 to fix
The OM651 2.2-litre CDI diesel engine used in GLC220d and GLC250d variants has a documented weakness in the balance shaft chain and oil pump drive chain system. The balance shaft chain can stretch, wear, or fail prematurely due to insufficient lubrication and chain tensioner design limitations. In severe cases the chain can jump or break, destroying the balance shaft module and causing oil pump drive failure. Loss of oil pressure following pump drive failure rapidly leads to catastrophic main bearing and crankshaft damage requiring full engine replacement. The failure is often preceded by a low-pitched rumbling distinct from normal diesel clatter, audible at idle from the lower engine.
Symptoms to notice
Rattling or rumbling from lower engine at idle especially when warm
Oil pressure warning light activating
Increased engine vibration at idle from failing balance shaft
Metal particles in engine oil detected at service
Engine knock or sudden power loss in catastrophic terminal failure
What to check
Start the engine and listen carefully for lower engine noise at idle that is distinct from normal diesel clatter - any unusual rumbling warrants immediate investigation. Request full service history and verify oil change intervals under 10,000km. Ask specifically if balance shaft or lower engine work has been completed. Scan for fault codes related to oil pressure or balance shaft timing correlation. If a workshop inspection is possible: Check oil level and condition; a drain-plug magnet or oil analysis will reveal metal particles in failing engines.
Where to look: Lower engine block, balance shaft module, oil pump drive chain assembly in sump area
Ask the seller
“Has the balance shaft chain or oil pump drive been inspected or replaced?”
“Is there any record of lower engine noise or oil pressure warnings?”
“Can you provide full oil change service history with dates and odometer readings?”
“Has the engine oil ever shown metal contamination or been analysed?”
02MBUX infotainment freezes and camera dropouts (X254)
MinorOccasionalElectrical $300–$3,500 to fix
The X254's large portrait MBUX screen can freeze, reboot or drop CarPlay/Android Auto and the 360-degree camera. Usually a software update resolves it, but confirm everything works because the head unit is expensive. As a new used model, check the car has had its updates applied.
Symptoms to notice
Central screen freezes or reboots
CarPlay/Android Auto dropouts
360/reversing camera blank or laggy
What to check
Work through the MBUX menus, pair a phone, and check the cameras respond when reversing. Ask whether the latest software has been installed.
Where to look: Dashboard portrait MBUX display and head unit
Ask the seller
“Does the screen ever freeze or restart?”
“Are the infotainment updates current?”
