Pre-purchase car inspection in Rotorua

A smaller market where cars often come from within the district, which means a good proportion have spent their whole lives in the local air.

Geothermal air and electrical corrosion

Rotorua’s geothermal activity puts hydrogen sulphide into the air. It is well known for attacking copper and silver, which is exactly what electrical contacts, connectors and circuit boards are made of. A car that has lived here can have corrosion in places rust never reaches.

  • Every electrical function, one at a time: windows, mirrors, central locking, lights, wipers, heated seats, stereo.
  • Exposed connectors and earth points under the bonnet for green or black powdery deposits on the metal.
  • Intermittent faults especially — a connection that works cold and fails warm is a classic corroded-contact symptom.
  • Any warning light that clears and returns rather than staying on.
  • Bare copper anywhere it is visible, including battery terminals and earth straps.

What Rotorua does to its cars

  • The Rotorua Daily Post reported geothermal hydrogen sulphide destroying the copper tubing in some home heat pumps, and council staff named Ngapuna, Whakarewarewa, the Government Gardens area and Sulphur Point among the higher-sulphur areas. Source
  • Rotorua averages about 20 air frosts a year to coastal Tauranga’s 4, according to NIWA: colder starts than the coast an hour away. Source
  • Kaingaroa, between Rotorua and Taupō, is the country’s largest plantation forest, and forestry roads mean working utes and 4WDs in the local market. Source

Questions

Does it matter which part of Rotorua a car has lived in?

It can. Council staff quoted by the Rotorua Daily Post named Ngapuna, Whakarewarewa, the Government Gardens area, Sulphur Point and parts of Marguerita Street among the areas with higher hydrogen sulphide, and said Western Heights is least affected. A car garaged in a high-sulphur area deserves a closer look at every electrical function, exposed connectors, earth straps and battery terminals.

Why would a Rotorua car have electrical faults?

Hydrogen sulphide attacks copper and silver. The Rotorua Daily Post reported heat-pump copper tubing destroyed in some homes, and BRANZ found steel corroding many times faster in geothermal areas. Car wiring, connectors and circuit boards use the same metals. Test every switch one at a time, look for green or black powder on plugs and earth points, and treat an intermittent fault or a warning light that comes and goes as a warning sign.

How much does a pre-purchase car inspection cost in Rotorua?
