What to look out for

The checks worth doing on a Ford Mustang before you hand over any money. Every documented fault is listed below, each with its own page.

  • Costly issue

Lift rear of vehicle and check for movement in differential mounting bushings and subframe bushings by prying.

    See why

IRS rear differential and subframe bushing deterioration

The S550 independent rear suspension introduced bushings and differential mounts that wear faster than expected under spirited driving. Differential carrier bushings and subframe bushings degrade, causing rear end vagueness, clunking, and imprecise handling. Particularly notable on cars driven hard or imported with unknown history. Aftermarket solid bushings are a common upgrade but factory rubber bushings are a known weak point.

    What you would notice

    • Clunking from rear suspension over bumps or during acceleration
    • Vague or wandering rear-end feel
    • Rear toe changes unpredictably under power
    • Vibration through chassis under hard acceleration

    Typically $600–$2,200 to put right.

  • Costly issue

Lift front wheels and check lower ball joint for play by grasping the tyre at 6 and 12 o'clock and attempting to rock it.

    See why

Front lower control arm ball joint wear

The front lower control arm ball joints on the S550 are susceptible to premature wear, especially where cars have been lowered or driven aggressively. The ball joints are not separately replaceable – the entire lower control arm must be replaced when the joint fails. This significantly increases repair cost. Clunking on turn-in and over bumps is the primary indicator.

    What you would notice

    • Clunking or knocking from front suspension over bumps
    • Vague or loose steering feel at centre
    • Pulling to one side when braking
    • Uneven front tyre wear

    Typically $700–$2,000 to put right.

025.0 Coyote V8 Valve Spring Fracture

Check service history for TSB 17-0007 valve spring replacement.petrol2015 onwardEngine
OccasionalEngine $1,800–$5,500 to fix

Can't confirm for this car

Ford issued TSB 17-0007 covering premature valve spring failure on the 5.0L Coyote V8. Springs fracture at high RPM, causing a collapsed valve, misfire, and in severe cases valve-to-piston contact and complete engine failure. The TSB applies to 2011-2017 Coyote engines but failures on S550 (2015+) Mustangs are well documented. A significant proportion of enthusiast-driven Mustangs reach high RPM regularly, making this a material pre-purchase risk in the NZ used market.

Symptoms to notice

  • Single-cylinder misfire under load at high RPM
  • P030X misfire code for one cylinder
  • Ticking from valve train under load
  • Sudden loss of power accompanied by rough running

What to check

  1. Check service history for TSB 17-0007 valve spring replacement.
  2. Rev the engine to redline under controlled conditions and listen for any ticking or misfire.
  3. Scan for cylinder-specific misfire codes.

Where to look: Valve train, both cylinder heads, 5.0L V8

Ask the seller

  • “Has the valve spring TSB (17-0007) been carried out?”
  • “Has the car been tracked or regularly driven to redline?”

032.3L EcoBoost Timing Chain Stretch

Cold-start and listen for chain rattle.petrol2015 onwardEngine
OccasionalEngine $2,200–$4,800 to fix

Can't confirm for this car

The 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder Mustang shares the same timing chain architecture as other Ford EcoBoost applications and exhibits similar chain stretch on high-mileage or poorly serviced examples. Stretch results in cam-crank correlation codes and cold-start rattle. NZ-imported 2.3 EcoBoost Mustangs commonly arrive with US odometer readings that understate actual wear, making chain condition a key inspection point.

Symptoms to notice

  • Cold-start rattle from front of engine
  • P0016 or P0017 cam/crank correlation codes
  • Rough idle on cold start settling after warm-up
  • Occasional hesitation at partial throttle

What to check

Cold-start and listen for chain rattle. Verify oil service history – EcoBoost chains degrade rapidly on extended intervals. If a workshop inspection is possible: OBD scan for cam timing codes.

055.0 Coyote V8 elevated oil consumption under hard driving

Check the dipstick and note the level, and ask the seller how much oil it uses between changes.petrol2015 onwardEngine
CommonEngine $0–$500 to fix

Can't confirm for this car

The 5.0 Coyote in the GT can use noticeable oil, especially if the car has been driven hard or tracked - Ford considers up to roughly a litre per 1,600km to be within spec, which surprises buyers used to a car that never needs topping up. On a used performance car this matters because low oil combined with track abuse is what leads to bearing and cylinder wear. It is a normal characteristic to plan for, not necessarily a fault, but a car burning far more than that has a problem.

Symptoms to notice

  • Oil level dropping between services
  • Needing to top up oil, more so after spirited driving
  • Faint blue smoke under very hard acceleration in a worn example

What to check

  1. Check the dipstick and note the level, and ask the seller how much oil it uses between changes.
  2. Ask directly whether the car has been tracked or launched hard.
  3. A GT that needs regular top-ups is normal-ish; one that empties fast or smokes is not.

Where to look: Engine - check via the dipstick at the front of the V8

Ask the seller

  • “How much oil does it use between services?”
  • “Has this car ever been driven on a track or drag strip?”

01S650 digital dash / SYNC 4 infotainment glitches and early software recalls

Start the car and watch that both screens boot cleanly and show speed and warning lights.petrol2023 onwardElectrical
OccasionalElectrical $0–$1,500 to fix

Can't confirm for this car

The latest S650 Mustang moved to twin digital screens (a fully digital instrument cluster and SYNC 4 infotainment). As with most new heavily-software cars, early build owners have reported screen freezes, black-screen-on-start, reversing-camera dropouts and other glitches that are addressed by software updates and, in some markets, recalls. Because the gauges are now a screen, a display fault can leave you without speed or warning lights, so it matters more than a normal infotainment bug.

Symptoms to notice

  • Instrument or centre screen freezes, flickers or goes black
  • Reversing camera image drops out or lags
  • Infotainment reboots itself
  • Bluetooth/Apple CarPlay dropouts

What to check

  1. Start the car and watch that both screens boot cleanly and show speed and warning lights.
  2. Select reverse and check the camera comes up promptly.
  3. Ask whether all recall and software updates have been completed at a Ford dealer - keep the paperwork.

Where to look: Digital instrument cluster and centre infotainment screen on the dashboard

Ask the seller

  • “Have all software updates and recalls been done?”
  • “Do the screens ever freeze, go black or reboot?”

02Timing chain tensioner arm and guide wear (4.6 2V V8 GT)

Ask for the engine to be cold and stand at the front of the car during start-up.petrol2000–2004Engine
OccasionalEngine $2,500–$5,000 to fix

Does not apply

The 4.6 2V uses two long timing chains with nylon-faced tensioner arms and plastic guides. On 2000-on engines the nylon face can wear through to the aluminium base, the chain goes slack and slaps, the plastic guides break, and debris can block the oil pickup screen. Ford issued a service bulletin for the same wear on 2000-2003 Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis with this engine, and Mustang owners report the same failure at higher mileage. Caught early it is a timing chain kit; if a chain jumps or the oil pickup starves, the engine can be badly damaged.

Symptoms to notice

  • Rattle or grinding from the front of the engine, loudest on cold start
  • Slapping chain noise at idle that changes with revs
  • Check engine light for cam timing or misfire
  • Fine glittery or plastic particles in the oil

What to check

  1. Ask for the engine to be cold and stand at the front of the car during start-up; listen for a rattle or grinding from the front of the engine that lasts more than a second or two.
  2. At idle and with gentle revs, listen at the front timing cover for a slapping or whirring chain noise.
  3. Check the oil filler cap and dipstick with a phone torch for fine glittery or plastic flakes in the oil.
  4. Ask for the service history and whether the timing chains, tensioners and guides have been replaced, especially past about 160,000 km.
  5. If a workshop inspection is possible: have a mechanic listen with a stethoscope at the timing cover and inspect the oil pickup screen and old oil for nylon or aluminium debris.

Where to look: Front of the engine behind the timing cover, both cylinder banks

0710R80 10-speed automatic harsh shifts and shudder

Drive it through slow-speed shifts and gentle acceleration and feel for harsh clunks or a shudder.petrol2018–2023Transmission
OccasionalTransmission $500–$4,000 to fix

Does not apply

From 2018 the automatic S550 uses the 10R80 10-speed auto (co-developed with GM). Owners report harsh or clunky 1-2 and 2-3 shifts, a shudder or flare on light throttle, and occasional hunting between its many ratios, particularly before the fluid and software were updated. Many cases are improved with a fluid change and control-software update, but a neglected unit with a shudder can need valve-body or clutch work. Ford issued shift-quality service updates for this transmission.

Symptoms to notice

  • Hard clunk or jolt on low-speed up/down shifts
  • Shudder or slip feeling on light acceleration
  • Gearbox hunting or holding gears oddly
  • Delayed engagement into Drive or Reverse

What to check

  1. Drive it through slow-speed shifts and gentle acceleration and feel for harsh clunks or a shudder.
  2. Ask whether the transmission fluid has been changed and whether the shift-quality software update was applied.
  3. Have it scanned for transmission codes.

115.0 Coyote V8 'typewriter/BBQ tick' and cylinder scoring risk

The 5.0 Coyote V8 GT is known for a rhythmic ticking at warm idle that owners nickname the 'typewriter tick' or 'BBQ tick'.petrol2015–2023Engine
CommonEngine $0–$8,000 to fix

Does not apply

The 5.0 Coyote V8 GT is known for a rhythmic ticking at warm idle that owners nickname the 'typewriter tick' or 'BBQ tick'. Ford's official position is that it is a normal characteristic that doesn't hurt durability, and for most cars it never causes trouble. However, some engines replaced under warranty for a severe tick were found to have piston-slap-related cylinder scoring, so a loud, worsening tick is worth taking seriously on a used car you can't return. Gen-3 (2018+) engines with plasma-coated bores are part of the discussion.

Symptoms to notice

  • Rhythmic ticking/tapping at warm idle that speeds up with revs
  • Tick most noticeable once the engine is hot
  • In severe cases, tick with rising oil use

What to check

Let the engine idle until fully warm with the bonnet up and listen for a light, even tick (common and usually harmless) versus a loud, heavy knock that changes with load (a warning sign). Ask for the service history and whether oil use has climbed. A faint tick alone shouldn't scare you off, but pair it with the oil-consumption check below.

Where to look: Top end of the V8 engine; noise is most audible from the top of the block at idle

Ask the seller

  • “Does the engine tick get louder over time, and has oil use increased?”
  • “Has the engine ever been opened up or had warranty work?”
Electrical1
Fluid leaks1

01Convertible top hydraulic cylinder and hose leaks

Ask the seller to lower and raise the roof twice while you watch; both sides should move together, smoothly, without stopping.1994–2004Fluid Leaks
CommonFluid Leaks $400–$1,800 to fix

Does not apply

Convertible SN95 and New Edge Mustangs raise and lower the roof with an electric pump and two hydraulic cylinders fed with ATF. The cylinder seals and the hose fittings wear and leak, so the roof moves slowly, unevenly or stops part way, and fluid can stain the rear seat area and roof fabric. Leaking cylinders are usually replaced as a pair, and a tired pump may need replacing too.

Symptoms to notice

  • Roof moves slowly or one side lags
  • Roof stops part way and has to be pushed
  • Red oily stains behind the rear seats or on the roof fabric
  • Pump whines but roof does not move

What to check

  1. Ask the seller to lower and raise the roof twice while you watch; both sides should move together, smoothly, without stopping.
  2. Listen to the pump behind the rear seat; a long whine with little movement means low fluid or a leak.
  3. With a phone torch, look behind the rear seats and at each side where the roof folds for red oily fluid, stains or damp carpet.
  4. Check the roof fabric and rear window for oil spots and tears.
  5. Ask whether the cylinders, hoses or pump have been replaced.
  6. If a workshop inspection is possible: have the pump reservoir level checked and the cylinders and brass hose fittings inspected for seepage.

Where to look: Pump and reservoir behind the rear seat; hydraulic cylinders at each side of the roof frame

Ask the seller

  • “Does the roof go up and down on its own every time?”
  • “Have the hydraulic cylinders or pump been replaced?”
  • “Has anyone topped up the roof pump fluid?”
