What to look out for
Costly issue
Let the car idle for 5-10 minutes after a drive and watch the tacho for dips or surging.
Rough idle and intermittent stalling (crank angle sensor / EGR carbon build-up)
TS Astras commonly develop intermittent stalling and erratic idle from a failing crankshaft position sensor sending bad signals to the ECU, and from carbon fouling of the EGR valve and throttle body. The car may cut out at intersections or when coming to a stop, then restart normally, which makes the fault hard to reproduce for a mechanic and dangerous in traffic.

01Low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI) piston damage (1.4 turbo B14XFT)
Does not apply
Does not apply
The BK/BL Astra's 1.4 turbo suffered a known LSPI problem caused by calibration: abnormal combustion at low revs under load can crack ring lands and destroy pistons, with owner reports of engine failure around 90,000km. Holden ran a recall/service campaign in 2020 involving an ECU re-flash and oil change with a specific low-LSPI oil. Cars that missed the campaign, or that have been serviced with the wrong oil spec, remain at risk, and Holden's exit from the market means goodwill claims are effectively over.

02AF23 / AF33 6-Speed Automatic Shift Solenoid and Valve Body Wear
Does not apply
Does not apply
The 6-speed automatic transmission fitted to higher-spec AH and PJ Astras suffers from shift solenoid wear and valve body contamination leading to harsh, delayed, or flaring gear changes. The fault is most common at higher mileage and is exacerbated by extended transmission fluid service intervals. In some cases the entire valve body requires replacement; in others a fluid flush and solenoid replacement restores acceptable function.

03VVT camshaft phaser rattle and failure (Z18XER, MY07.5-on)
Does not apply
Does not apply
The updated Z18XER 1.8 in late AH Astras uses twin variable-valve-timing phasers that are a well-known industry problem: they rattle like a diesel at idle, set VVT fault codes, put the check-engine light on and sap power. Missing or blocked oil-feed tubes and worn phasers are the usual cause. Fixing it properly means new cam phasers plus a timing belt kit, as the belt must come off anyway.

Does not apply051.6 turbo cracked rocker cover causing oil leak and rough running
Does not apply06PCV failure / rocker cover split causing whistle and rough idle (1.4T)
Does not apply
Does not apply
The PCV system on the 1.4 turbo is built into the plastic rocker cover, and the diaphragm fails or the cover itself splits around 60,000-80,000km. The engine then whistles, idles roughly, sets lean codes and can push oil past seals. The fix is a complete new rocker cover (the PCV is not sold separately) and owners have reported bills around $1,300 AUD at dealers; independents do it cheaper.

07Thermostat housing cracks and thermostat sticks shut, overheating (1.8 Z18XER, AH Astra)
Does not apply
Does not apply
The 1.8-litre Z18XER petrol in the AH Astra uses an electronically controlled thermostat in a housing that develops fine cracks. When that happens the wax inside the thermostat escapes and it stops opening, so the engine overheats. Caught early it is a modest part replacement, but driving on with an overheating engine can damage the cylinder head.
Example of the part — not this vehicleA double-valve engine thermostat, labelled: the wax capsule is what sticks.

01CIM (steering column module) failure — indicators, wipers, horn play up
Does not apply
Does not apply
The AH Astra's Column Integration Module, which houses the indicator and wiper stalks and reads the steering angle sensor, fails commonly. Symptoms range from indicators not self-cancelling and wipers with a mind of their own to warning chimes, ESP faults and steering-related warning lights. Early cars were subject to recall/service campaigns. Replacement modules must be coded to the car, so it is not a cheap DIY fix.

01Front Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Premature Wear
Does not apply
Does not apply
The AH and PJ Astra front lower control arm ball joints wear prematurely. The joint is pressed into the arm and is non-serviceable as a standalone item on most variants, requiring replacement of the entire arm. Failed ball joints cause handling vagueness and in extreme cases joint separation, which is an MoT/WoF failure and a serious safety risk. A well-documented fault across multiple Astra AH forums and NZ vehicle inspection data.
Example of the part — not this vehicleA separated lower ball joint: the control arm has dropped and the wheel has splayed out under the guard.

02AH Astra Takata driver airbag critical recall (2005 to 2009 model years)
Does not apply
Does not apply
AH Astras from the 2005 to 2009 model years, all engines, are covered by a Takata driver airbag recall (PRA 2019/17363). The inflator propellant can absorb moisture over time, and in a crash the inflator housing can rupture and throw metal fragments into the cabin. The recall was escalated to critical, meaning owners were told to stop driving the car until the airbag was replaced. The replacement is free at a Holden or GM dealer, so the only cost is if the work was never done.

03Front lower control arm bush 'de-bonding' — creaks over speed humps
Does not apply
Does not apply
BK/BL Astras develop a creaking or groaning noise from the front end over speed humps and driveways caused by internal de-bonding of the front lower control arm bushes. Holden's fix was replacing the affected control arm(s). It is not dangerous in the short term but will fail a WoF if the bush is visibly separated, and it makes the steering feel vague.
Example of the part — not this vehicleA separated lower ball joint: the control arm has dropped and the wheel has splayed out under the guard.

Holden Astra buyer questions
Is the Holden Astra reliable?
Like any used car, it depends on the specific example and its service history. Across the 16 documented faults for the Holden Astra, the recurring problem areas are engine, suspension, and interior. A Holden Astra with a full service history and no signs of the issues listed on this page can be a sound buy but each one needs to be checked individually before you commit.
What are the most common problems with a used Holden Astra?
We've catalogued 16 known faults for the Holden Astra, covering engine, suspension, and interior. All 16 are written out in full on this page, with the symptoms to notice, what to inspect, and typical repair costs for each. Free to read, no account needed.
How much do repairs cost on a Holden Astra?
Most single repairs on the Holden Astra fall between $400–$1,100 at NZ independent-workshop rates. Some of the 16 documented faults cost less and a few cost considerably more, and no one car needs them all. Knowing which ones to look for before you view is what lets you negotiate the price down or walk away.
Should I get a pre-purchase inspection on a Holden Astra?
Yes. A Holden Astra inspection focused on its known weak points is the single best way to avoid an expensive mistake. KickTyres gives you a guided, model-specific inspection plus a market valuation and negotiation figure for $24.90 far less than the cost of missing one of the faults on this page.
