What to look out for
Common issue
Any audible or visible play at the ball-joint ends confirms wear.
Front anti-roll bar end-link failure under commercial loads
Vito models used in commercial delivery and tradesman applications accelerate wear in the front anti-roll bar drop links. The ball-joint ends wear and develop play, causing a metallic knock over bumps. This is accepted as normal wear in commercial use but is frequently missed at WoF due to inspector access difficulty. Failed links allow excessive body roll and increase tyre and suspension wear.

OM651 vans doing stop-start city delivery work clog their EGR valves early (often 60,000-80,000 km) and struggle to regenerate the diesel particulate filter, and Euro 6 vans add AdBlue/SCR faults. The result is warning lights, reduced power and limp mode - and a warning light is an instant compliance headache. A van used mainly for short trips is higher risk; a motorway-run van far less so.

01OM611 timing chain wear and tensioner failure
Does not apply
Does not apply
The pre-facelift W638 Vito's OM611 2.2 CDI diesel engine is notorious for timing chain stretch and hydraulic tensioner failure. Chain slack causes rattling on cold start and can lead to chain jump and catastrophic valve damage. A known design weakness in the early CDI units with insufficient lubrication to the upper chain guide.

01Bodywork rust, especially white commercial vans (W639)
Does not apply
Does not apply
The W639 Vito rusts where commercial vans do - wheel arches, sills, door bottoms, tailgate/rear doors and around the sliding-door tracks. Owners note white vans (the bulk of the commercial fleet) fared worse because non-metallic paint got thinner factory protection. Facelift 2010-2012 cars are a little better. Surface rust is cosmetic; rot at structural points fails a WoF.

Does not apply
The M112 2.4-litre petrol V6 fitted to early W639 Vito models has two well-documented failure points. First, the oil heat exchanger gasket seal fails from thermal degradation, producing persistent oil leaks from the exchanger housing on the side of the engine. Second, the crankshaft pulley harmonic balancer is prone to delamination of its rubber damping layer after approximately 80,000 km, causing the outer pulley ring to separate. Pulley failure produces vibration, accessory belt misalignment, and if allowed to progress, can damage the crankshaft position sensor and ancillary drive components.
