What a DPF repair costs in NZ, by model
201 documented DPF faults across 130 models. Half of them start at or below $600, and half top out at or below $3,800. Every fault below shows its own range, from the cheapest fix recorded to the worst case. Figures are approximate, at New Zealand independent workshop rates.
A diesel particulate filter traps soot from the exhaust and burns it off at high temperature, a process called regeneration. A diesel that only does short, slow trips never gets hot enough for long enough, so the filter clogs, the car goes into a reduced-power mode, and it needs a forced clean or a new filter.
What the price covers
The low end is a forced regeneration or a professional clean. The high end is a new filter, sometimes with sensors. Some faults recorded here are really a symptom of something upstream, such as injectors or the EGR system, which is why those pages are linked from each fault.
How to check before you buy
- Look for a DPF or engine warning light, and ask how the car has been used. A town-only diesel is the risk.
- On a test drive, check the car pulls cleanly and does not drop into limp mode.
- Ask whether the DPF has been removed. A removed DPF is illegal and can fail a WoF.

About these figures
Each range is the one documented against that fault in the KickTyres catalogue, at independent workshop rates in New Zealand. Dealer labour, genuine parts and damage found along the way push a real bill higher; a reconditioned part or an early catch can bring it lower.
