A working ute of this age in New Zealand has usually lived outdoors, often near the coast, and often on gravel or farm tracks that pack mud into the chassis rails. The rails rust from the inside out, so the outside can look sound while the section underneath has gone. What to check

4x4 Couriers and their Mazda twins use a dash-button Remote Free Wheel system: engine vacuum shifts a collar to connect the front axle instead of manual locking hubs. The vacuum hoses perish, the actuator diaphragm leaks and the shift collar sticks, so 4WD either refuses to engage — the RFW light flashing or staying off — or stays stuck engaged, which on sealed roads causes driveline wind-up, scrubbed front tyres and, at worst, snapped CV joints or transfer case damage.
