B8 Multilink Rear Trailing Arm Bush Failure
The B8 Passat uses a fully independent multilink rear suspension with pressed-in rubber bushes in the trailing arm and the lower lateral arms. The bushes, particularly the large trailing arm forward mount bush, degrade in the NZ and AU environment due to road salt exposure on coastal routes and the relatively aggressive spring and damper tune on the Passat. Failed bushes allow the rear axle geometry to move under cornering and braking loads, causing progressive rear-end vagueness and a characteristic tramping sensation over mid-corner bumps. Advanced wear causes audible clunking over expansion joints and measurable rear toe change that can only be resolved by bush replacement. Alignment cannot correct the handling deviation once bushes are excessively worn.

Can't confirm for this car
The B8 Passat 2.0 TDI uses AdBlue (SCR) after-treatment. The dosing pump, injector, level sensor and NOx sensors fail, giving a countdown warning that eventually stops the car restarting, plus limp mode and reduced power. Parts are dealer-priced and diagnosis can be involved. It is the most common warning-light cause on the late diesel Passat and worth checking carefully because a 'no-restart' countdown can strand you.

04DSG DQ250 Mechatronic Unit Failure
Can't confirm for this car05DQ381 7-Speed DSG Mechatronic Oil Leak
Can't confirm for this car
Can't confirm for this car
The DQ381 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission introduced on the B8 Passat has documented mechatronic unit seal failures causing transmission fluid to leak into the electrical harness connector of the mechatronic assembly. Fluid ingress degrades solenoid resistance and contaminates the pressure control circuits, causing erratic clutch pack engagement. The typical presentation is slipping or hesitation under load, particularly when pulling away from a standstill or when the transmission is under torque during overtaking. The mechatronic unit requires removal of the transmission for full replacement. Early production units from 2015-2018 are most affected; VW updated the mechatronic connector seal specification in a running change.

012.0 TDI Timing Belt Failure and Premature Tensioner Wear
Does not apply022.0 TDI oil pump / balance-shaft hex-drive failure and DPF issues
Does not apply
Does not apply
The 2.0 TDI B6/B7 Passat carries the notorious balance-shaft oil-pump module whose hex drive can round off, dropping oil pressure and destroying the engine with little warning - documented from around 120,000-150,000 km. These cars also share the EA189 diesel family caught up in the emissions ('dieselgate') fix, after which some owners report more EGR/DPF trouble. Between a possible catastrophic oil-pump failure and the DPF/EGR after-treatment, the diesel Passat rewards a careful history check.

03R36 3.6 VR6 FSI (BWS) Timing Chain Stretch and Guide Wear — Rear-Mounted Chains
Does not apply041.8T oil sludge and ignition coil-pack failure
Does not apply
Does not apply
The B5.5 Passat's 1.8 20-valve turbo is prone to oil 'sludging' - the small oil galleries and turbo feed coke up with baked oil if servicing was ever skipped or the wrong oil used, starving the turbo and bearings. It was a well-known enough problem that VW extended warranties on it when new. Alongside this, the coil packs fail and cause misfires. A sludged 1.8T can need an engine rebuild; a good service history is everything on this engine.

Does not apply072.0 TDI High-Pressure Fuel Pump Cam Follower Wear
Does not apply
Does not apply
The Bosch CP4 and earlier pump-driven high-pressure fuel pumps on 2.0 TDI engines are driven off a lobe on the camshaft via a cam follower (roller or bucket tappet). Under normal wear the follower degrades, and metal debris contaminates the entire high-pressure fuel circuit — injectors, pump, and fuel rail. This is distinct from the cam follower on the BKD/BMN engines which is a known separate issue. Contamination requires complete fuel system replacement and is catastrophically expensive. VW issued a service action requiring inspection and follower replacement at 40,000 km intervals.

081.4 TSI Timing Chain Tensioner Wear (CBZA/CDAB)
Does not apply
Does not apply
The 1.4 TSI engines used in the B7 Passat share a design-sensitive timing chain tensioner that is susceptible to premature wear, particularly on vehicles that run extended oil change intervals or use incorrect oil specification. Unlike the 2.0 TSI, the 1.4 TSI tensioner is a plastic-ratchet type; wear causes chain slap and eventual skip. The cam follower on the CBZA is also prone to accelerated wear transferring metal debris into the oil circuit.

Does not apply
The Diesel Particulate Filter on 2.0 TDI Passat variants becomes blocked prematurely when the vehicle is used predominantly on short urban trips. The DPF requires sustained motorway-speed driving to reach the temperature needed for passive regeneration. Forced active regeneration injects additional fuel to raise exhaust temperature, but if this cycle fails repeatedly — due to EGR faults, short trips, low oil level, or oil that has absorbed too much diesel — the DPF reaches its service soot limit and must be professionally cleaned or replaced.

13Haldex 4Motion Coupling Pump and Clutch Failure
Does not apply
Does not apply
The Haldex Generation 4 all-wheel-drive coupling used in 4Motion Passat variants relies on a pre-charging pump to pre-fill clutch plates before torque demand. The pump is driven by an electric motor and relies on clean Haldex-specific oil changed every 30,000–40,000 km. Neglected oil service causes the pump to seize, blocking instant torque transfer to the rear axle. The clutch plates then run dry and wear rapidly. A failed Haldex unit delivers no torque to the rear wheels and the car behaves as a front-wheel-drive vehicle. Full unit replacement is the typical outcome.

Does not apply
2011 and 2012 model year Passats (all engines) were recalled in Australia because a bent or broken spring can jam the starter motor relay, so the starter stays powered after the engine starts and can overheat, scorch nearby parts or catch fire (PRA 2018/16669). The relay check or replacement is free at a Volkswagen dealer.

02Instrument-cluster pixel loss and gauge faults
Does not apply
Does not apply
The B5.5 Passat's instrument cluster suffers the classic VW dead-pixel problem: the central display fades or shows scrambled/missing segments, and the fuel and temperature gauges can read erratically or stick. It is an age-related failure of the cluster itself. While you can still drive, a failing cluster can hide a genuine overheat or low-fuel situation, and a replacement or specialist repair is needed. It is one of the most predictable faults on these cars.

01Takata driver airbag inflator recall (late B6 and B7 Passat, 2009-2015)
Does not apply
Does not apply
Late B6 and B7 Volkswagen Passats (all engines) sold from 2009 to 2015 were recalled in Australia because the Takata driver airbag propellant can absorb moisture with age, and the inflator can then rupture in a crash and throw metal fragments at the driver (PRA 2018/17197, PRA 2019/17582 and PRA 2019/17348). The airbag replacement is free at a Volkswagen dealer. An unrepaired Takata airbag can injure or kill in an otherwise survivable crash.
