The ZH Escape PHEV (sold in Europe as the Kuga PHEV) was recalled globally soon after launch because cells in the drive battery could short internally, overheat and catch fire while charging or driving; affected cars were told not to charge at all until battery packs were replaced. All EcoBoost engines in the Escape use gasoline direct injection (GDI), meaning fuel is injected directly into the cylinder rather than past the intake valves. Without fuel washing over the intake valves, oil vapours from the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system deposit carbon on the back face of the intake valves over time. By 80,000-120,000 km, significant carbon build-up restricts airflow, causing rough idle, misfires, and a progressive loss of power. The only effective remedy is an intake manifold removal and mechanical cleaning, typically performed using walnut shell blasting.
