What a turbo repair costs in NZ, by model

185 documented turbo faults across 123 models. Half of them start at or below $900, and half top out at or below $4,000. Every fault below shows its own range, from the cheapest fix recorded to the worst case. Figures are approximate, at New Zealand independent workshop rates.

A turbocharger uses exhaust gas to spin a compressor that forces more air into the engine. It spins very fast on an oil-fed bearing, so it depends on clean oil and a cool-down after hard driving. Actuators and variable vanes, which control boost, are also common failure points.

What the price covers

Low figures are usually an actuator, a boost pipe or cleaning sticking vanes. High figures are a new or reconditioned turbo, sometimes with engine damage if the turbo failed and fed oil or debris into the engine.

How to check before you buy

  • Listen for a whistle or siren sound that rises with the throttle.
  • Look for blue smoke on acceleration and oil inside the intake pipes.
  • Feel for flat spots or a sudden loss of power, which can be the car protecting itself.
  • Check the service history for regular oil changes.

About these figures

Each range is the one documented against that fault in the KickTyres catalogue, at independent workshop rates in New Zealand. Dealer labour, genuine parts and damage found along the way push a real bill higher; a reconditioned part or an early catch can bring it lower. Get a written quote for the car you are looking at, and use these figures to judge it.
