What to look out for

The checks worth doing on a Kia Cerato before you hand over any money. Every documented fault is listed below, each with its own page.

  • Serious issue

Remove timing cover and verify belt tension and tensioner spring preload.

    See why

Gamma G4ED timing belt tensioner spring fatigue

Identical failure mode to the Rio JB G4ED platform: the spring-loaded timing belt tensioner in the G4ED 1.6L Gamma fitted to the Cerato LD loses progressive preload through thermal cycling over time and mileage. Belt tension drops below design specification without any obvious external sign—the belt does not fray or visibly slip. Under acceleration or cold-start conditions the slack belt skips teeth on the camshaft sprocket. Because the Gamma is an interference design, this immediately causes piston-to-valve contact, bending multiple valves and cracking valve seats. Cylinder head replacement or full engine replacement is typically required. The failure has no preceding audible warning and often catches owners by surprise at highway speed.

    What you would notice

    • Sudden complete engine failure with no prior warning
    • Engine cranks but will not fire after belt skip
    • Metallic thud from engine compartment at point of valve contact
    • Coolant loss if cylinder head cracks during valve-piston collision

    Typically $400–$900 to put right.

  • Serious issue

Ask for proof the engine recall (REC-005724, Kia campaign 230047) has been done, or ring a Kia dealer with the VIN.

Connecting rod bearing failure and engine seizure recall (2.0 Nu GDI G4NC, YD Cerato 2013-2015)

The 2.0-litre Nu GDI petrol engine in 2013 to 2015 YD Cerato models can wear its connecting rod bearings, which starts as a knocking noise and can end with the engine seizing, a sudden loss of drive, or a fire. Kia Australia recalled these cars in August 2023 (REC-005724, campaign 230047): dealers inspect the engine and replace it free of charge if needed. Kia also added Knock Sensor Detection System software that flashes the engine light and puts the car in limp mode when bearing wear begins, so the warning is not ignored. A car that has never had the recall done, or that knocks, should be treated as a possible engine replacement.

    What you would notice

    • Knocking noise from the engine that rises with revs
    • Flashing engine warning light
    • Car goes into limp mode and will not rev past about 2,000 rpm
    • Engine stalling or losing power
    • Oil level dropping

    Typically $0–$8,000 to put right.

  • Serious issue

Turn the key to on and watch the airbag warning light: it should light for a few seconds then go out and stay out on the test drive.

    See why

YD Cerato airbag control unit recall: airbags may not deploy (2016-2018, REC-005069)

On 2016 to 2018 YD Cerato models (all engines), the airbag control unit cover and its memory chip can be built with too little clearance, which can switch on the airbag warning light and stop the airbags deploying in a crash. Kia Australia recalled about 40,800 cars in March 2022 under recall REC-005069 (Kia campaign 221004). The dealer fix is free: a new control unit if the warning light is on and the fault code is stored, otherwise a software update. A car that missed the recall may have no working airbags.

    What you would notice

    • Airbag (SRS) warning light stays on after start-up
    • Airbag light comes on intermittently while driving

    Typically $0–$1,500 to put right.

  • Serious issue

Request documented proof of timing belt replacement with date and odometer reading.

2.0 Beta Timing Belt Overdue Service — Interference Engine

The Beta 2.0 engine in the first and second-generation Cerato (LD and TD chassis) is an interference-design engine with a rubber timing belt requiring replacement at approximately 90,000 km intervals. Many used examples in NZ/AU have no documented belt service. A snapped belt causes immediate valve-to-piston contact and destroys the engine with no warning. Verifying timing belt service is the single highest-priority check on any pre-2013 Cerato purchase.

    What you would notice

    • No advance warning — belt fails without audible symptoms in most cases
    • Engine cranks but will not fire after belt failure
    • Possible rough running or slight timing noise if belt is severely glazed (rare)

    Typically $500–$1,000 to put right.

  • Costly issue

Ask the seller to show current oil level on the dipstick and note the level relative to the maximum mark.

    See why

2.0 Nu G4NC GDI piston ring flutter & oil consumption

The G4NC 2.0L Nu GDI engine fitted to the Cerato YD exhibits piston ring flutter at partial throttle and light load conditions. Ring instability allows engine oil to migrate past the piston into the combustion chamber where it is burned. Owners frequently report consumption of 0.5 to 1.5 litres per 1,000 km without visible external leaks. Direct injection also accelerates carbon build-up on intake valves, as injector wash-down absent in port injection engines does not occur. Kia issued internal technical guidance acknowledging the fault but did not initiate a widespread recall for the YD generation in NZ or AU markets.

    What you would notice

    • Need to top up engine oil between scheduled services
    • Blue smoke from the exhaust on startup or during deceleration
    • Fouled or oil-wetted spark plugs on inspection
    • Carbon build-up on throttle body or intake valves visible on borescope
    • Slight degradation of fuel economy alongside oil consumption

    Typically $2,500–$7,000 to put right.

  • Costly issue

Test drive slowly in car parks and in stop-start conditions — judder typically appears below 20 km/h.

    See why

7DCT Dual Clutch Low-Speed Judder and Shudder

The 7-speed dual clutch transmission (7DCT) fitted to 1.4T and 1.6T variants exhibits pronounced shudder, judder, and harsh engagement during low-speed manoeuvring and stop-start traffic, caused by clutch pack slip and friction material glazing under the automated wet-clutch engagement logic. Kia has issued multiple TSBs recommending DCT fluid replacement and clutch calibration resets, though repeat judder after treatment is common. Severe cases require clutch pack replacement or mechatronic unit overhaul.

    What you would notice

    • Shuddering or vibration through the drivetrain when pulling away from standstill
    • Jerky low-speed progress in traffic, particularly in first and second gear
    • Clunking or hesitation when selecting Drive from Park or Reverse
    • Harsh gear changes at low throttle inputs below 40 km/h
    • Transmission warning light in advanced cases with stored fault codes

    Typically $400–$5,500 to put right.

01Piston ring defect recall, engine wear to engine failure (2.0 MPi Nu, BD Cerato 2020-2022)

petrol2020–2022Engine
OccasionalEngine $0–$9,000 to fix

Can't confirm for this car

The 2.0-litre MPi petrol engine in 2020 to 2022 BD Cerato models is under an Australian safety recall (REC-006395, Kia campaign 251031, July 2025) because the piston rings may not meet manufacturing specification. Faulty rings cause abnormal engine wear and oil leaks and can end in the engine failing or stalling while driving, with a fire risk from leaked oil. Kia dealers inspect the engine, replace it free of charge if it is damaged, and load engine software that watches for early signs of failure. The 1.6 turbo GT is not part of this recall.

Symptoms to notice

  • Engine knocking or rattling noise
  • Oil level dropping between services
  • Oil leaking under the engine
  • Engine warning light
  • Engine stalling or losing power while driving

What to check

  1. Ask the seller for proof the piston ring recall (REC-006395, Kia campaign 251031) has been done, such as a dealer invoice or service book stamp, or ring a Kia dealer with the VIN.
  2. Check the oil level on the dipstick and look for oil wetness under the engine with a phone torch.
  3. Start the engine and listen for knocking or rattling, then watch for an engine warning light on the test drive.
  4. If a workshop inspection is possible: have the codes read and ask a Kia dealer to confirm the recall status and the engine software update against the VIN.

Where to look: Inside the engine (pistons), engine bay

Parts involved: Turbocharger.

Ask the seller

  • “Has the piston ring recall been done, and can I see the paperwork?”
  • “Was the engine replaced under the recall?”
  • “How much oil does it use between services?”

02Connecting rod bearing failure and engine seizure recall (2.0 Nu GDI G4NC, YD Cerato 2013-2015)

  2. Start the engine from cold and listen for a knock from low in the engine, then rev it gently and listen again.
  3. On the test drive watch for a flashing engine light or the car refusing to rev, which is the knock sensor software doing its job.
  4. Check the oil level on the dipstick.
  5. If a workshop inspection is possible: have the codes read and look for P1326, and ask a Kia dealer to confirm the recall and software status against the VIN.

Where to look: Inside the engine (crankshaft and connecting rods), engine bay

Ask the seller

  • “Has the engine recall been done, and can I see the dealer paperwork?”
  • “Has the engine ever been replaced?”
  • “Has the engine light ever flashed or the car gone into limp mode?”

032.0 Beta Timing Belt Overdue Service — Interference Engine

Request documented proof of timing belt replacement with date and odometer reading.petrol2004–2012Engine

  • Engine cranks but will not fire after belt failure
  • Possible rough running or slight timing noise if belt is severely glazed (rare)

What to check

Request documented proof of timing belt replacement with date and odometer reading. If no documentation exists, treat the belt as overdue and budget for immediate replacement before taking ownership. Where accessible, inspect the belt through the timing cover inspection plug for cracking, fraying, glazing, or oil contamination.

Where to look: Engine front, timing belt and cover on the accessory side of the engine bay

Parts involved: Timing belt.

Ask the seller

  • “Has the timing belt been replaced and do you have receipts or workshop records?”
  • “What is the current odometer and when was the belt last changed?”
  • “Were the tensioner and idler pulley replaced at the same time as the belt?”

057DCT Mechatronic Unit and Clutch Actuator Failure

Check for transmission warning lights or stored fault codes — P0842, P0847, P0962 are common mechatronic-related codes on this unit.petrol2018–2023Transmission
OccasionalTransmission $2,800–$7,500 to fix

Can't confirm for this car

Beyond routine clutch judder, the 7DCT's internal mechatronic unit — which houses the solenoids, hydraulic control valves, and electronic control logic for both clutch packs — can develop solenoid wear or hydraulic circuit contamination that causes gear selection errors, failure to engage drive, or transmission entering limp-home mode. Contaminated DCT fluid is the primary driver, as metallic debris from clutch wear circulates through the narrow hydraulic galleries and degrades solenoid valve function over time.

Symptoms to notice

  • Transmission warning light with limp-home mode restricting gears available
  • Refusal to engage Drive or Reverse, or delay of several seconds before gear engagement
  • Random neutral drops while driving at speed
  • Fault codes related to clutch pressure solenoids or gear position sensors
  • Transmission overheating warning during low-speed manoeuvring

What to check

  1. Check for transmission warning lights or stored fault codes — P0842, P0847, P0962 are common mechatronic-related codes on this unit.
  2. Test gear engagement from cold and after reaching operating temperature.
  3. Inquire about DCT fluid service history; vehicles that have never had the fluid changed above 60,000 km are at elevated risk.
  4. Note any hesitation or refusal to select a gear.

Where to look: Dual clutch transmission — mechatronic valve body and solenoid pack inside the gearbox

Parts involved: Mechatronic / valve body, Clutch.

Ask the seller

  • “Has the DCT fluid ever been serviced and the transmission inspected for fault codes?”
  • “Has the transmission ever entered limp-home mode, refused to engage a gear, or shown a warning light?”
  • “Is the vehicle still within Kia's powertrain warranty period, and has any transmission work been carried out?”

10G4FC 1.6 CVVT oil pickup screen clogging low pressure

Remove oil filler cap and inspect underside for sludge or varnish deposits.petrol2009–2013Engine
OccasionalEngine $250–$700 to fix

Can't confirm for this car

The G4FC 1.6L CVVT engine in the Cerato TD has an oil pickup tube strainer at the base of the sump that is prone to partial blockage from varnish and sludge accumulation when oil change intervals have been extended beyond 7,500 km or when incorrect viscosity grades were used. The CVVT system feeds narrow oil galleries that are among the first circuits to suffer from reduced flow. A partially blocked pickup causes intermittent low oil pressure at hot idle, triggering the oil pressure warning lamp after the engine reaches operating temperature. In more advanced cases, CVVT actuator oil starvation leads to camshaft phaser wear and a characteristic cold-start rattle as the phaser hunts for correct timing.

Symptoms to notice

  • Oil pressure warning light illuminating at hot idle in traffic
  • Cold-start CVVT rattle lasting 2-5 seconds before clearing
  • Rough idle that stabilises once oil pressure builds after blip of throttle
  • Oil pressure light flickering when coming to a stop after highway run

What to check

  1. Remove oil filler cap and inspect underside for sludge or varnish deposits.
  2. Check CVVT solenoid oil screen for blockage.
  3. Review oil service history for extended intervals or non-specification grade usage.
  4. If a workshop inspection is possible: Drop the sump and visually inspect the pickup tube strainer for clogging with carbon deposits.

Where to look: Engine oil sump, pickup tube strainer at base of oil pan below crankshaft

Ask the seller

  • “How often was the oil changed and what grade and brand was used?”
  • “Has the oil pressure warning light ever illuminated at idle?”
  • “Has the engine ever rattled on cold start and does it clear after a few seconds?”

12EGR Valve Carbon Fouling and Sticking (1.4T / 1.6T)

Scan for stored or pending fault codes P0401 (EGR flow insufficient) or P0402 (excessive EGR flow).petrol2018–2023Engine
CommonEngine $300–$950 to fix

Can't confirm for this car

The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve on turbocharged G4FJ and G4KH engines is prone to carbon buildup that causes the valve to stick open or closed. A stuck-open EGR introduces excessive exhaust gas into the intake charge, diluting the air-fuel mixture and causing rough running, misfires, and check engine lights. Stuck-closed failure raises combustion temperatures and causes pre-ignition risk. The issue is accelerated by short-trip urban use where the engine never fully reaches operating temperature to self-clean the valve.

Symptoms to notice

  • Rough idle or hunting idle particularly when cold
  • Hesitation or stumble on light throttle tip-in from idle
  • Check engine light with EGR-related fault codes (P0401, P0402, P0403)
  • Slightly increased fuel consumption compared to specification
  • Occasional stalling at idle in traffic on cold or damp mornings

What to check

  1. Scan for stored or pending fault codes P0401 (EGR flow insufficient) or P0402 (excessive EGR flow).
  2. Check for rough idle that improves with throttle.
  3. Inspect the EGR valve body and passages for visible carbon deposits if accessible.
  4. Note whether the previous owner used the vehicle mainly for short urban trips, which is the highest-risk usage pattern.

Where to look: EGR valve mounted on the intake manifold — upper engine bay, accessible from the top

Parts involved: EGR valve.

Ask the seller

  • “Has the car been used primarily for short city trips, and has the EGR valve ever been inspected or cleaned?”
  • “Has the check engine light ever appeared, and if so what codes were present?”
  • “Has there ever been a rough idle or stumbling issue at low speeds or when cold?”

13G4NB / G4FJ Electronic Throttle Body Carbon Buildup

Check idle quality — a carboned throttle body often causes an erratic, hunting idle between 600 and 900 RPM.petrol2018–2023Engine
OccasionalEngine $150–$480 to fix

Can't confirm for this car

The electronic throttle body on both the 2.0 G4NB and 1.4T G4FJ is susceptible to carbon accumulation around the butterfly valve and bore, which restricts airflow at idle and causes the engine control unit to fight against a partially blocked throttle plate. The symptoms mimic vacuum leaks and can trigger idle adaptation faults. Unlike port-injection engines, the GDI and TGDI variants cannot use intake fuel to keep the throttle body clean, making periodic cleaning necessary.

Symptoms to notice

  • Erratic or hunting idle that oscillates between low and high RPM
  • Stalling or near-stalling when coming to a stop with the clutch depressed (manual) or in Drive at idle
  • Hesitation immediately after cold start before the engine settles
  • Fault codes for idle speed control or throttle body adaptation (P0505, P0506)
  • Rough running that clears temporarily after a high-RPM motorway run

What to check

Check idle quality — a carboned throttle body often causes an erratic, hunting idle between 600 and 900 RPM. Scan for idle control or throttle position sensor codes. Physically inspect the throttle body bore and blade for visible dark carbon deposits. After cleaning, a throttle body relearn procedure (idle reset) is mandatory to restore correct idle control.

Where to look: Throttle body mounted on the intake manifold inlet — upper engine bay, connected to the air intake duct

Ask the seller

  • “Has the throttle body ever been cleaned or inspected, and at what mileage?”
  • “Does the car idle smoothly when stationary in traffic, or does it hunt or occasionally stall?”
  • “Has the check engine light come on for any idle control or throttle-related fault codes?”

01YD Cerato airbag control unit recall: airbags may not deploy (2016-2018, REC-005069)

Turn the key to on and watch the airbag warning light: it should light for a few seconds then go out and stay out on the test drive.2016–2018Electrical
OccasionalElectrical $0–$1,500 to fix

Can't confirm for this car

On 2016 to 2018 YD Cerato models (all engines), the airbag control unit cover and its memory chip can be built with too little clearance, which can switch on the airbag warning light and stop the airbags deploying in a crash. Kia Australia recalled about 40,800 cars in March 2022 under recall REC-005069 (Kia campaign 221004). The dealer fix is free: a new control unit if the warning light is on and the fault code is stored, otherwise a software update. A car that missed the recall may have no working airbags.

Symptoms to notice

  • Airbag (SRS) warning light stays on after start-up
  • Airbag light comes on intermittently while driving

What to check

  1. Turn the key to on and watch the airbag warning light: it should light for a few seconds then go out and stay out on the test drive.
  2. Ask the seller for proof the airbag control unit recall (REC-005069, Kia campaign 221004) was done, such as a dealer invoice or service book stamp, or have a Kia dealer check the VIN.
  3. If a workshop inspection is possible: have the airbag system scanned for stored code B162000.

Where to look: Airbag control unit, under the centre console area of the cabin

Ask the seller

  • “Has the airbag control unit recall (Kia campaign 221004) been done, and can you show me the paperwork?”
  • “Has the airbag warning light ever come on?”

02Front Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Wear

Inspect the ball joint boot for cracking or grease leakage, which accelerates wear.petrol2004–2018Suspension
CommonSuspension $400–$900 to fix

Can't confirm for this car

Front lower control arm ball joints on Cerato models across all three generations are a documented wear item. Ball joint failure causes vague steering, clunking from the front suspension, and in severe cases, joint separation — a critical safety failure. NZ/AU road conditions and mileage accelerate the wear cycle. On most Cerato variants the lower arm is replaced as a complete assembly when the joint is worn.

A separated lower ball joint: the control arm has dropped and the wheel has splayed out under the guard.

Elfix · CC0 · Wikimedia Commons

Symptoms to notice

  • Clunking or knocking from front suspension over bumps, particularly at low speed
  • Vague or imprecise steering feel
  • Uneven or accelerated front tyre wear
  • Play detectable when rocking the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock positions on a hoist

What to check

Inspect the ball joint boot for cracking or grease leakage, which accelerates wear. Compare both sides for symmetry. If a workshop inspection is possible: On a hoist, grasp the tyre at 12 and 6 o'clock and rock firmly — any looseness indicates ball joint play. Use a pry bar under the lower control arm to load the joint and check for movement.

Where to look: Front lower control arm, ball joint at the outer (wheel carrier) end

Parts involved: Ball joint.

Ask the seller

  • “Have the front lower control arms or ball joints been replaced?”
  • “Is there any clunking from the front when going over bumps?”
  • “When was the front suspension last inspected by a mechanic?”

03YD Cerato electric power steering coupling click or knock (Kia TSB CHA074, 2013 build)

2013–2014Suspension
CommonSuspension $150–$450 to fix

Can't confirm for this car

On YD Cerato models built during 2013 (all engines), the small flexible coupling between the electric power steering motor and the steering column can wear early, producing a click or knock from behind the dash when the wheel is turned, especially when parked. Kia issued technical service bulletin CHA074 (2016, revised 2019) to replace it with a redesigned coupling marked HNBR, and says the problem is worst in humid coastal climates. It is a noise and feel problem rather than a loss of steering, and the part is cheap, but labour is needed to fit it.

Symptoms to notice

  • Click or knock felt through the steering wheel when turning it with the car stopped
  • Clunk from behind the dash on rough roads or when changing steering direction

What to check

With the engine running and the car stopped, turn the steering wheel slowly left and right a quarter turn each way and listen and feel for a click or knock from behind the dash. Repeat at walking pace in a car park. Ask whether the steering coupling has been replaced under the Kia bulletin. If a workshop inspection is possible: the coupling can be checked for the HNBR marking once the lower dash trim is removed.

Where to look: Steering column behind the dash, where the electric power steering motor joins the column

Parts involved: Steering rack.

Ask the seller

  • “Has the steering ever clicked or knocked when turning the wheel?”
  • “Has a dealer replaced the power steering coupling under Kia bulletin CHA074?”
