What to look out for
Costly issue
Run a magnet along the lower sill and rear quarter — presence of filler reduces magnetic pull measurably.
Lower sill and rear quarter panel lower edge corrosion
The Cerato LD has thin-gauge steel at the lower door sill box section seam and the lower 100-150 mm of the rear quarter panel where factory anti-corrosion wax cavity injection coverage was inconsistent across production years. Moisture and road debris accumulate in the closed sill section via drain holes and seam gaps, and the factory seam sealer degrades over time. Corrosion initiates from inside the closed section and is invisible externally until a paint blister appears, at which point significant metal thickness has already been consumed from within. Rear quarter corrosion typically originates at the lowest pinch weld seam and migrates upward into the wheel arch lip. Vehicles imported from Japan frequently show hidden structural rust concealed under body filler applied before export.

Inspect the ball joint boot for cracking or grease leakage, which accelerates wear.
Front Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Wear
Front lower control arm ball joints on Cerato models across all three generations are a documented wear item. Ball joint failure causes vague steering, clunking from the front suspension, and in severe cases, joint separation — a critical safety failure. NZ/AU road conditions and mileage accelerate the wear cycle. On most Cerato variants the lower arm is replaced as a complete assembly when the joint is worn.

012.0 Beta Timing Belt Overdue Service — Interference Engine
Can't confirm for this car
Can't confirm for this car
The Beta 2.0 engine in the first and second-generation Cerato (LD and TD chassis) is an interference-design engine with a rubber timing belt requiring replacement at approximately 90,000 km intervals. Many used examples in NZ/AU have no documented belt service. A snapped belt causes immediate valve-to-piston contact and destroys the engine with no warning. Verifying timing belt service is the single highest-priority check on any pre-2013 Cerato purchase.

01Piston ring defect recall, engine wear to engine failure (2.0 MPi Nu, BD Cerato 2020-2022)
Does not apply
Does not apply
The 2.0-litre MPi petrol engine in 2020 to 2022 BD Cerato models is under an Australian safety recall (REC-006395, Kia campaign 251031, July 2025) because the piston rings may not meet manufacturing specification. Faulty rings cause abnormal engine wear and oil leaks and can end in the engine failing or stalling while driving, with a fire risk from leaked oil. Kia dealers inspect the engine, replace it free of charge if it is damaged, and load engine software that watches for early signs of failure. The 1.6 turbo GT is not part of this recall.

02Connecting rod bearing failure and engine seizure recall (2.0 Nu GDI G4NC, YD Cerato 2013-2015)
Does not apply
Does not apply
The 2.0-litre Nu GDI petrol engine in 2013 to 2015 YD Cerato models can wear its connecting rod bearings, which starts as a knocking noise and can end with the engine seizing, a sudden loss of drive, or a fire. Kia Australia recalled these cars in August 2023 (REC-005724, campaign 230047): dealers inspect the engine and replace it free of charge if needed. Kia also added Knock Sensor Detection System software that flashes the engine light and puts the car in limp mode when bearing wear begins, so the warning is not ignored. A car that has never had the recall done, or that knocks, should be treated as a possible engine replacement.

037DCT Mechatronic Unit and Clutch Actuator Failure
Does not apply
Does not apply
Beyond routine clutch judder, the 7DCT's internal mechatronic unit — which houses the solenoids, hydraulic control valves, and electronic control logic for both clutch packs — can develop solenoid wear or hydraulic circuit contamination that causes gear selection errors, failure to engage drive, or transmission entering limp-home mode. Contaminated DCT fluid is the primary driver, as metallic debris from clutch wear circulates through the narrow hydraulic galleries and degrades solenoid valve function over time.

Does not apply
The G4FC 1.6L CVVT engine in the Cerato TD has an oil pickup tube strainer at the base of the sump that is prone to partial blockage from varnish and sludge accumulation when oil change intervals have been extended beyond 7,500 km or when incorrect viscosity grades were used. The CVVT system feeds narrow oil galleries that are among the first circuits to suffer from reduced flow. A partially blocked pickup causes intermittent low oil pressure at hot idle, triggering the oil pressure warning lamp after the engine reaches operating temperature. In more advanced cases, CVVT actuator oil starvation leads to camshaft phaser wear and a characteristic cold-start rattle as the phaser hunts for correct timing.

09EGR Valve Carbon Fouling and Sticking (1.4T / 1.6T)
Does not apply
Does not apply
The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve on turbocharged G4FJ and G4KH engines is prone to carbon buildup that causes the valve to stick open or closed. A stuck-open EGR introduces excessive exhaust gas into the intake charge, diluting the air-fuel mixture and causing rough running, misfires, and check engine lights. Stuck-closed failure raises combustion temperatures and causes pre-ignition risk. The issue is accelerated by short-trip urban use where the engine never fully reaches operating temperature to self-clean the valve.

10G4NB / G4FJ Electronic Throttle Body Carbon Buildup
Does not apply
Does not apply
The electronic throttle body on both the 2.0 G4NB and 1.4T G4FJ is susceptible to carbon accumulation around the butterfly valve and bore, which restricts airflow at idle and causes the engine control unit to fight against a partially blocked throttle plate. The symptoms mimic vacuum leaks and can trigger idle adaptation faults. Unlike port-injection engines, the GDI and TGDI variants cannot use intake fuel to keep the throttle body clean, making periodic cleaning necessary.

01YD Cerato airbag control unit recall: airbags may not deploy (2016-2018, REC-005069)
Does not apply
Does not apply
On 2016 to 2018 YD Cerato models (all engines), the airbag control unit cover and its memory chip can be built with too little clearance, which can switch on the airbag warning light and stop the airbags deploying in a crash. Kia Australia recalled about 40,800 cars in March 2022 under recall REC-005069 (Kia campaign 221004). The dealer fix is free: a new control unit if the warning light is on and the fault code is stored, otherwise a software update. A car that missed the recall may have no working airbags.

01YD Cerato electric power steering coupling click or knock (Kia TSB CHA074, 2013 build)
Does not apply
Does not apply
On YD Cerato models built during 2013 (all engines), the small flexible coupling between the electric power steering motor and the steering column can wear early, producing a click or knock from behind the dash when the wheel is turned, especially when parked. Kia issued technical service bulletin CHA074 (2016, revised 2019) to replace it with a redesigned coupling marked HNBR, and says the problem is worst in humid coastal climates. It is a noise and feel problem rather than a loss of steering, and the part is cheap, but labour is needed to fit it.

Kia Cerato buyer questions
Is the Kia Cerato reliable?
Like any used car, it depends on the specific example and its service history. Across the 17 documented faults for the Kia Cerato, the recurring problem areas are engine, electrical, and transmission. A Kia Cerato with a full service history and no signs of the issues listed on this page can be a sound buy but each one needs to be checked individually before you commit.
What are the most common problems with a used Kia Cerato?
We've catalogued 17 known faults for the Kia Cerato, covering engine, electrical, and transmission. All 17 are written out in full on this page, with the symptoms to notice, what to inspect, and typical repair costs for each. Free to read, no account needed.
How much do repairs cost on a Kia Cerato?
Most single repairs on the Kia Cerato fall between $400–$1,500 at NZ independent-workshop rates. Some of the 17 documented faults cost less and a few cost considerably more, and no one car needs them all. Knowing which ones to look for before you view is what lets you negotiate the price down or walk away.
Should I get a pre-purchase inspection on a Kia Cerato?
Yes. A Kia Cerato inspection focused on its known weak points is the single best way to avoid an expensive mistake. KickTyres gives you a guided, model-specific inspection plus a market valuation and negotiation figure for $24.90 far less than the cost of missing one of the faults on this page.
