02QR25 pre-cat breakup causing engine damage (petrol vans)

With the engine warm, listen at the manifold for a marble-like rattle (broken cat substrate).petrol2001–2012Engine
OccasionalEngine $800–$6,500 to fix

Can't confirm for this car

Petrol E25 Caravans with the QR25DE 2.5 share the engine family's infamous pre-catalyst problem: the small catalyst built into the exhaust manifold breaks up, and the ceramic dust gets drawn back into the cylinders where it scores the bores. That leads to heavy oil consumption and ultimately a worn-out engine. It is most common on early (2002-2006 era) QR25 engines. Once bores are scored the only real fix is an engine rebuild or replacement; the preventive fix is replacing the manifold/pre-cat before it fails.

Symptoms to notice

  • Rattle from the exhaust manifold area
  • Rising oil consumption between services
  • Blue smoke under acceleration
  • Loss of compression / power

What to check

With the engine warm, listen at the manifold for a marble-like rattle (broken cat substrate). Check the dipstick and ask about oil top-ups - more than about a litre per 1,000 km on a QR25 is a red flag. A compression test before purchase is cheap insurance.

Where to look: Exhaust manifold with integrated pre-catalyst on the QR25 petrol engine; bores/pistons if damage has occurred

Parts involved: Exhaust manifold, Catalytic converter.

Ask the seller

  • “How much oil does it use between services?”
  • “Has the exhaust manifold or pre-cat ever been replaced?”
  • “Has a compression test been done recently?”

02Turbo actuator failure / low boost on YD25 (NV350)

Test drive fully loaded if possible, or at least up a decent hill - a healthy 2.5 turbo-diesel NV350 should pull without drama.diesel2012 onwardEngine
OccasionalEngine $800–$3,000 to fix

Does not apply

NV350s with the YD25 suffer turbo actuator and boost-control faults that leave the van gutless, smoky or stuck in limp mode. Sometimes it is just a sticking actuator or split boost hose; on higher-km vans the turbo itself is worn. Diagnosis is straightforward for a diesel shop, but a full turbo replacement is costly, so pin down whether it is actuator, plumbing or the turbo core before negotiating.

Symptoms to notice

  • Noticeable lack of power, especially uphill or loaded
  • Limp mode after hard acceleration
  • Whistling or hissing from the engine bay
  • Black smoke under load

What to check

  1. Test drive fully loaded if possible, or at least up a decent hill - a healthy 2.5 turbo-diesel NV350 should pull without drama.
  2. Listen for boost leaks (hissing) and check for oil around the turbo and intercooler hoses.

Where to look: Turbocharger and actuator on the exhaust side of the diesel engine

Parts involved: Turbocharger.

Ask the seller

  • “Has the turbo or its actuator ever been replaced?”
  • “Does it ever go into limp mode?”

01Rear Drum Brake Adjuster Seizure

Test handbrake effectiveness on a slope.2012 onwardBrakes
CommonBrakes $300–$750 to fix

Does not apply

Rear drum brake self-adjusting mechanisms on the NV350 Caravan corrode and seize in NZ's coastal and high-humidity environments, particularly on vehicles used infrequently or stored near the coast. Seized adjusters prevent compensating for shoe wear, resulting in excessive pedal travel, poor handbrake holding, and uneven braking. Drum removal for adjuster replacement and shoe inspection is required. This is a routine but commonly ignored fault on NZ commercial van stock.

Symptoms to notice

  • Handbrake lever requiring excessive travel to hold on a slope
  • Increasing brake pedal travel before vehicle decelerates
  • Vehicle pulling to one side under gentle brake application
  • Grinding or groaning from rear on brake engagement

What to check

  1. Test handbrake effectiveness on a slope.
  2. Assess pedal feel for sponginess or excessive travel.
  3. If brake feel is inconsistent, have rear drums removed and adjuster mechanisms inspected for corrosion and seizure.

Where to look: Rear drum brake adjuster mechanisms, left and right rear

Ask the seller

  • “When were the rear brakes last serviced?”
  • “Has the vehicle been stored or operated near the coast or in wet conditions?”
  • “Does the handbrake hold firmly and engage within the first few clicks?”

Nissan Caravan buyer questions

Is the Nissan Caravan reliable?

Like any used car, it depends on the specific example and its service history. Across the 9 documented faults for the Nissan Caravan, the recurring problem areas are engine and brakes. A Nissan Caravan with a full service history and no signs of the issues listed on this page can be a sound buy but each one needs to be checked individually before you commit.

What are the most common problems with a used Nissan Caravan?

We've catalogued 9 known faults for the Nissan Caravan, covering engine and brakes. All 9 are written out in full on this page, with the symptoms to notice, what to inspect, and typical repair costs for each. Free to read, no account needed.

How much do repairs cost on a Nissan Caravan?

Most single repairs on the Nissan Caravan fall between $800–$3,000 at NZ independent-workshop rates. Some of the 9 documented faults cost less and a few cost considerably more, and no one car needs them all. Knowing which ones to look for before you view is what lets you negotiate the price down or walk away.

Should I get a pre-purchase inspection on a Nissan Caravan?

Yes. A Nissan Caravan inspection focused on its known weak points is the single best way to avoid an expensive mistake. KickTyres gives you a guided, model-specific inspection plus a market valuation and negotiation figure for $24.90 far less than the cost of missing one of the faults on this page.
