What an EV battery fault costs in NZ, by model

33 documented EV battery faults across 18 models. Half of them start at or below $6,000, and half top out at or below $14,000. Every fault below shows its own range, from the cheapest fix recorded to the worst case. Figures are approximate, at New Zealand independent workshop rates.

An electric car’s battery is most of what you are paying for. Its capacity decides the car’s range, and replacing it can cost more than an older EV is worth. The figures below are the documented costs for battery faults on each model, from cell and module faults to full pack replacement and recall work.

Why they fail

Every lithium battery loses capacity over time. Heat, frequent fast charging and long periods at full or empty charge speed that up, and cars without active battery cooling are more exposed. Separately, some models have had manufacturing defects in their cells, handled by recall.

How to check before you buy

  • Get a battery state-of-health reading. Many EVs show one in a menu or through a cheap app and adapter; a dealer or specialist can produce a report.
  • Ask the seller whether any battery recall has been completed, and confirm it with a franchise dealer using the VIN.
  • Compare the range shown at full charge with what the model offered when new.

About these figures

Each range is the one documented against that fault in the KickTyres catalogue, at independent workshop rates in New Zealand. Dealer labour, genuine parts and damage found along the way push a real bill higher; a reconditioned part or an early catch can bring it lower.
