What a hybrid battery repair costs in NZ, by model

83 documented hybrid battery faults across 56 models. Half of them start at or below $2,350, and half top out at or below $7,250. Every fault below shows its own range, from the cheapest fix recorded to the worst case. Figures are approximate, at New Zealand independent workshop rates.

A hybrid carries two batteries: an ordinary 12-volt one for the lights and electronics, and a high-voltage traction battery that drives the electric motor. This page is about the second. It is the single most expensive part on most hybrids, and on an older imported car it is the part most likely to be near the end of its life.

Why they fail

Traction batteries lose capacity with age, heat and use. Older nickel-metal-hydride packs, such as those in many Priuses and Aquas, usually fail one module at a time, so the car throws a warning and runs on the petrol engine more. Lithium packs in newer hybrids and plug-ins fail less often but cost more to replace. A blocked battery cooling fan or duct speeds all of this up.

What the price covers

The range for each model runs from a module repair or reconditioned pack at the low end to a new genuine pack fitted by a dealer at the high end. The figures below are the catalogue’s documented ranges for that model’s battery faults, not quotes.

How to check before you buy

  • Ask for a battery health test from a hybrid specialist, or pay for one. It is the one inspection a hybrid genuinely needs.
  • Look for a hybrid system warning on the dash after a cold start, and watch whether the engine runs almost all the time on a gentle drive.
  • Check the battery cooling intake, usually near the rear seat, for dust and pet hair.
  • Ask whether the pack has been replaced, when and by whom, and get the invoice.

About these figures

Each range is the one documented against that fault in the KickTyres catalogue, at independent workshop rates in New Zealand. Dealer labour, genuine parts and damage found along the way push a real bill higher; a reconditioned part or an early catch can bring it lower.
